Beets... what can be saif about them except that they defined my entire childhood. My mom tells me it is a South Indian thing, as she claims every South Indian eats it at least once a week. I didn't go more than 4 days at a stretch without eating them growing up. When I went to college I swore them off, and then my tastebuds missed home and I started appreciating them. I came full circle and now my kids complain that we eat beets too often. But I don't want to just eat them, I want to paint them too! And why not? They're gloriously colorful and lend themselves beautifully to art. Their deep reds and bright verdant green stems are perfect for a still life.
