I went to Guatemala many years ago and it was astoundingly beautiful. It left a deep mark on me and I've been meaning to explore Latin America in my paintings more often, so I went to Guatemala in this painting. The lush landscape actually takes a backseat to the young woman in the painting. The background is however very layered. Green forms the first layer on top of which I layered red ochre and indigo. Indigo has a deep history in a lot of cultures and is one of the ingredients in Maya blue. Guatemala has a very high population on Maya people, and the girl in the painting is from an indigenous background I felt using indigo would be a good tribute to her ethnicity.

The girl's face has the innocence of a child even though she has a large basket on her head. She's been thrust into contributing to her household's income but I felt her eyes still had a childish, innocent glimmer.
